International Workers’ Day, also known as Labor Day or Workers’ Day in some countries and often referred to as May Day, is a celebration of laborers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labor movement which occurs every year on May Day (1 May), an ancient European spring festival.

1 May is a statutory holiday in the People’s Republic of China. Prior to 2008, it was a three-day holiday, but is now just the one day. However, it is usually supplemented by two other days to give the appearance of a three-day holiday, but not being statutory holidays the extra days have to be “made up” by working either the preceding or following weekend. For example, in 2018, 1 May falls on Tuesday. Most workplaces, including all government offices, takes Sunday 29 April, Monday 30 April, and Tuesday 1 May off. As the middle day (30 April) is not statutory holidays we have to be “made up” by working the preceding weekend (28 April).
